CONVERSE Summer Internship

This summer I interned with one of the coolest companies in the world - Converse! I had just acquired my first pair of Chucks not long before I started the job and my collection soon expanded... getting free kicks was not the only intern benefit, I learned so much and grew in my design skills by being surrounded by so many talented and amazing people. I was on the Brand Design team working with PR and Events on a variety of different assignments from creating publications, event materials, applied graphics, to web and environmental designs.

I flew from Michigan to Massachusetts and lived in Boston for two months which gave me the opportunity to travel and see more of the world!

Though I can't stay away too long because Detroit is too deep within my heart (and Jessy's too).

Sixty sets... no sleep happened at all this weekend. Basing a lot of my decisions off playing with type earlier in the process helped a lot in developing a wide variety. Always need to start with the hands, makes life a lot easier than just jumping on the computer!

Voices In The Spaces

for Filter Detroit

Voices in the Spaces is a publication created in collaboration with Filter Detroit which highlights Bauhaus University of Weimar PHD student voices in the spaces they observed in Detroit. Each point of view referenced the physical spaces in Detroit in different ways being seen as a vacancy or opportunity. Seeing the city through many different windows is the main theme for this concept. I wanted this to be an experience piece which takes the reader through the same journey as the student - initially encountering Detroit as a blank city, but through interaction with the community, true beauty is revealed.

Featured in “Next City Detroit” exhibition in Hamburg, Germany. November 26-28, 2010.

Homeless BBQ Mobile/Web Interface

This project was to select a non profit organization that would benefit from a smart user interface experience. Elevate Detroit is an organization comprised of young adults who have a passion and heart for the homeless in the city. The main functionalities of this system are to directly connect those involved with this ministry to each other, while also leading up to and documenting the experience, as well as making it easy to receive information and share between the user's mobile devices and Elevate's main outlet which is Facebook.

Compassion Bottle Project

A book series on diversity

This is a series of three small books on cultural, genetic and personal diversity. The theme was on the word ‘hybrid’ which was selected at random and then transformed into three visual directions based on a scientific article, a piece of short fiction and my own personal story. I speak on plant and cultural hybridization which eventually combine to show how diversity is positive and is embraced in community through the use of color, type, grid structure and illustration to represent the mergence of these ideas.

As a side note, the coptic binding style was the most challenging method I've encountered. I've never bound a book the same way twice and this was my first all-nighter hand stitching.

Guts

This publication highlights the voice of Stefan Sagmeister and his philosophies about design, along with my own response to his work. The concept of guts is based off a direct quote about taking risks. I set the book up to tactilely reflect the issue using color and pacing seeing it as almost an alive appendage of this conversation. The deeper you page through the closer you get to the heart of the book. I designed a typeface made entirely out of pig intestines, which was a personal guts moment stepping out of my comfort zone to try and create something with a bit more life.

Practicum

I was selected to participate in CCS's practicum course where we worked to design the materials and space for the Student Exhibition Opening and Portfolio Day for the Graphic Design department. It was definitely a challenge to think about typography in the context of space, but as you can see we had a lot of fun playing with and embracing the possibilities.

This book's content includes the article 'Experimental Typography' by Peter Bilak along with my response. Bilak's voice and mine interact throughout the book and are distinguished by different size and weight of type. When we agree the text converges together, when we disagree the text separates, and on neutral issues the text is centrally aligned. I believe that there is such a thing as experimental typography and have chosen this opportunity to explore different personal experiments.

B&U Annual Report: Threaded Together

This is an annual report created in collaboration with Jenny Shaddach for our fictional fashion boutique, Buttons & Umbrellas. The title of the book “Threaded Together” represents how we envisioned our company in relationship to our customers, as a friendly tight-knit community of people who love fashion. The name of our store is derived from the story of how Jenny and I became friends and lead to us starting this company.

Tie it 'round

This project was to create a unique timeline from a chosen theme, mine was, “Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree.” I created an Illustrated and digital timeline. The digital timeline comprised of a process where all the numbers for the dates were created out of yellow ribbon, and to reference this I designed the title to reflect ribbons also.

Plant With Purpose Campaign

This is a campaign created for the non-profit international tree-planting organization Plant With Purpose; we had to create a series of six postcards, an event poster, a thank-you package and a website. The purpose of these materials is to spread awareness about the rural poor in countries like Haiti, Tanzania and Mexico. It is also a call to action on the viewers part to help out in anyway they can to further the mission to help grow these communities by planting trees.

This identity is for the 826 National brand, we were given a random location and through research were to come up with a unique 826 store in that area. Baltimore is the location of the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and University, so this Doctor Store is to identify with that specific area. 826 is a unique chain of stores throughout the nation that sells themed novelty items (spy kits, peg leg oil, speed of light in a can) to raise money for their own tutoring programs. http://www.826national.org/

Lifted by Love Logo (initial concept)

I was commissioned to do a logo for the organization Lifted by Love. I focused on creating a mark that was simple, youthful and expressive. I explored a more mature hand lifting a youthful hand to represent the work they do helping children, while also representing their work of compassion by creating a unique silhouette of a heart. The final mark I created was used for letterheads, envelopes and gift bags.

A cut and paste collage using a folding method called quatro. I've never done a free-form book collage before so this was definately an experiment, as with previous materials and processes classes it was very therapeutic... aka. getting myself away from the computer. It was also really great because I was introduced to letterpress for the first time, I couldn't stop touching the tiny metal type!

I took inspiration from one of my all-time favorie children's books, "Balloonia". This is a small hard-bound book in which I also wrote a small poem. The story is basically about this small girl who travels around the world by balloon and finds love.

This project is essentially a navigation system which reveals more information the more you interact with it. It is also a playground for the user, you can interact with the illustrations, navigate the space and swing the clouds back and forth. This was a fun little project made in Flash.

Compassion Bottles

I created four artifacts based around the words Apathy and Compassion in context of my neighborhood of study which was Cass Corridor, modernly known as Midtown. There is a high level of homelessness and hopelessness in the area. The Homeless BBQ is a community event created by Elevate Ministries which feeds, clothes and gives hope to the people in this area. This project uses a negative (apathetic) artifact that is seen frequently in the area (liquor in brown bags) and changes the connotation into a positive (compassionate) object - an event invitation and directions to the Homeless BBQ.
